A Journey Through Orthotropics and Mewing Treatment

Home: Welcome

ALTERNATIVE TO JAW SURGERY

When I was 12 I had a major class 2 malocclusion with a severe overjet of 10mm. My hospital-referred orthodontist instructed me to wait until I was 18 before undergoing jaw surgery to correct the condition.

My Gran who lived in London read a newspaper article about Dr John and Mike Mew's alternative treatment called Orthotropics.

I started the treatment at a late age of 14 and the results for me have been life changing!

My face transformed massively and my malocclusion was corrected and overjet fully closed.

I am now 23 and no one would ever know I had such a severe overbite when I was younger.

BECOME A NOSE BREATHER AND PREVENT SNORING!

Correct tongue posture and keeping the lips together while you sleep is really important for good progress, given you are asleep roughly 1/3 of the day. As your jaw drops and your mouth opens when you sleep, the tongue goes nearer to the airway which can cause snoring or sleep apnea. Mouth breathing can lead to sleeping difficulties and snoring, oral and dental diseases, changes in facial structure, hyperventilation and a compromised immune system.

A widely known concept which worked for me is to use tape. From the age of 15 I would put tape over my lips whilst I slept so that they were physically held together so my mouth couldn't open. I would have a natural lip posture when putting the tape over, as that's ultimately what I wanted to achieve.

At the start even though my lips were taped together I struggled to keep my teeth together and keep correct tongue posture. It takes time to adjust to keeping the lips together and even after several months sometimes the tape would fall off, but perseverance is key. It was particularly difficult for me having such a large overbite it was a struggle just to keep my lips together.

After a year or so, once I got better at keeping my lips together, I would use less tape and put the tape on more loosely. The tape was just there as a reminder and if I dropped my lower jaw the tape would just tug on the skin. The ultimate aim is to subconsciously keep a natural lips seal, correct tongue posture and teeth together all day and night and to breathe through your nose. For me it took several years to achieve this through a lot of ups and downs. When I had a cold and my nose was blocked I tried tape but often ended up just taking it off. However, now when I have a cold I can still breathe through my nose.

The tape I used was just the standard one from the first aid kit. However there are special tapes you can buy specialised for the lips and mouth.

1. WoodyKnows Snoring Relief Tape - Specially designed and engineered in a H shape, it won't cause any skin irritation and allows you to easily apply and remove the tape without leaving any sticky residue behind.

2. Lip Seal Tape - The tape is the shape of your lips, it is a hypoallergenic, latex free, non-woven polyester fiber tape with light silicone adhesive and safe for sensitive skin. https://lipsealtape.com/shop?olsPage=products
